dunnhumby ventures held its Retail Innovation Forum Americas on September 10, 2026 at The Compton Hotel in Bentonville, the third Bentonville edition. This event is invite only, with about 200 senior retail and technology leaders in the same room for an afternoon of panels and pitches. This edition launched the US Ecosystem Startup of the Year Competition with the National Retail Federation. The winner earns automatic entry into the NRF Innovators Showcase at NRF 2027 in New York.
The panel I’d like to recap was called: The Consumer Lens, Separating the Hype from the New Reality

It was moderated by Ellie Brooke of dunnhumby, with Chase Arnold of Bluebird Group, Jon Jacobson of Omnitalent, Christina Johnson of Adviser, Mark Rose of TransUnion, and Heather Nichols of Lyra Connect.
The through line was restraint. Use AI to synthesize context and then make the decision yourself. Garbage in, garbage out, applied directly to media plans and marketing budgets. One panelist described brand teams being handed AI-derived data as a proxy for a retailer's own first party data and told to go build their media plan from it, and argued the person who owns that budget still needs a voice.
On agents, the panel landed on category by category. Consumables and household staples, yes. Apparel and fresh food, not yet, because those purchases are emotional. One panelist said cart building is already automated in his household every week, with the human still approving the purchase.
Trust came up next. Panelists said people get different answers and different tones depending on which assistant they use, and flagged advertising inside AI assistants as an open question. On video, one panelist noted it has taken the majority of creator and influencer budgets, with TikTok reinforcing the shift.
The lightning round, lasting shift or temporary buzz: AI shopping agents, lasting, unanimous. AI advertising, lasting. Hyper personalization, mostly temporary buzz unless compute costs fall. Fully unified physical and digital, ten years of talk and still not here, with one prediction of a counter swing toward analog. Loyalty currency, lasting for the top five to ten programs. Autonomous purchasing, lasting, category by category.

Overall the event in Bentonville was an intimate setting for folks to meet and talk about retail trends and innovation.Â
