Case Study

Luxome, a luxury bedding and comfort brand, partnered with LiquiDonate to solve a persistent unsellable inventory problem. By integrating LiquiDonate's ReturnsDirect into their returns management system, Luxome now routes opened returns directly from customers to nearby nonprofits, bypassing their warehouses entirely. The result: 9,100+ items donated, 100,000+ miles of return shipping eliminated, and 34,639 pounds of textiles diverted from landfills across 22 cities.
Luxome is a fast-growing luxury comfort brand offering premium bedding, bath products, robes, loungewear, and pajamas. As a direct-to-consumer brand selling hundreds of thousands of items per year, Luxome faced a problem familiar to nearly every retailer: what to do with returned merchandise that can't be resold as new.
After years of failed attempts to donate, refurbish, and repurpose excess inventory, Luxome partnered with LiquiDonate, a supply chain software platform, to automatically match unsellable customer returns with vetted local nonprofits, eliminating reverse logistics costs in the process. The results have been transformative: thousands of items delivered to people in need, significant cost savings, and a return program that practically runs itself.
Luxome's return problem wasn't for lack of trying to solve it. Founder and CEO Hyaat Chaudhary had spent years searching for a responsible, brand-safe alternative to disposal and hit a wall at every turn.
Federal and state regulations made reselling returned goods as near impossible. The FTC's truth-in-advertising rules, combined with a patchwork of state-level hygiene regulations across their product categories, meant that open returns could not be resold, even if just the plastic was opened but the product was never touched.
Early donation attempts backfired. Luxome’s distribution warehouse started pushing back since they were not equipped to handle storage of returns. Hyaat couldn’t bear to see a perfectly good product thrown out, which is sadly the norm in these situations across US retailers. He first tried donating returns through their third-party logistics partner, but the local community simply couldn't absorb the high volumes of blankets, towels, and sheets. Items migrated from donation centers to thrift stores to eBay, where they were listed as "open box new." Luxome customers began canceling orders after finding the products cheaper online. The donation effort was hurting the brand it was meant to help, and Luxome was forced to stop.
Refurbishment wasn't viable either. Next, they tested several of the few U.S.-based textile refurbishment companies, sending a dozen items with documented stains, tears, and odors to evaluate. None of the vendors could restore the products to Luxome's brand standards for resale. Another dead end.
With no viable solution, Luxome's warehouse began refilling with unsellable inventory. Their fulfillment partner was frustrated. Chaudhary was stuck between two bad options: landfill or storage limbo.
It started eating at me. I just didn't want to throw products away that are perfectly good products.
LiquiDonate arrived at exactly the right moment, solving every problem Luxome had been unable to crack on its own.
WarehouseDirect: Clearing the Backlog Luxome began with LiquiDonate's WarehouseDirect service, handing over approximately 6,000 items that had accumulated in their 3PL warehouse with nowhere to go.
Rather than send pallets of items to an organization who couldn’t take them, LiquiDonate’s matching algorithm distributed them to nonprofits that were able to take those specific items in large quantities while also agreeing to not resell them. By donating exclusively to 501(c)(3) organizations, Luxome could also take advantage of tax benefits for a more favorable financial outcome.
Within weeks, the items were distributed to vetted nonprofits, and documented with official donation receipts. Luxome monitored resale channels and saw no meaningful spike in third-party listings. No brand damage. No cannibalization of sales.
ReturnsDirect: The Ongoing Easy Button In November 2024, Luxome started a pilot to donate their unsellable returns by integrating LiquiDonate directly with Luxome's return management system. Now with ReturnsDirect, a customer initiates a return on an opened item and receives an anonymized shipping label routing the product directly to a nearby nonprofit, bypassing the warehouse entirely.
The item never touches the 3PL facility, replacing high inbound shipping and storage costs with local transit distances, and eliminating rehandling and reprocessing fees for labor that a 3PL has no appetite for anyway.
The shipping savings alone were striking. Because ReturnsDirect routes items directly from the customer to a nearby nonprofit — rather than all the way back to a 3PL warehouse across the country — the distance each return travels drops dramatically. As Chaudhary put it:
In one month alone, we're saving over 100,000 miles of shipping — and that was before we really even truly ramped up with LiquiDonate.
This partnership continues over two years later, keeping unsellable inventory from piling up.
Luxome is not the average bedding and comfortwear company. Their incredible reputation comes from the quality and luscious feel of their sheets, robes, and loungewear. When their unsellable returns started getting distributed to individuals in need, the impact was heartfelt:
Please let Luxome know that their donations have made a huge difference in the lives of our recently housed, formerly homeless clients! We love decking them out with all this luxury sleep gear when they move in because it makes them feel safe and like there's something worth protecting. It's been a really valuable addition to our process.

There is joy in giving. Once Hyaat was able to find a safe and easy way to donate, he flipped the “on” button and put 100% of his opened inventory up for donation. Communities all over the US & Canada have benefited as a result, making it a win-win for all.
Built-In Fraud Protection LiquiDonate's nonprofit verification loop closed a critical gap in Luxome's returns process. When a nonprofit receives a donated item, they photograph and confirm receipt which completes a closed loop of custody. This prevents the potential scam of returning an empty box or a rock of equal weight while claiming a refund, since the system confirms what was actually received at the destination. By waiting to refund buyers until the item is verified by the nonprofit, retailers like Luxome can eliminate this category of fraud completely and recover lost revenue.
Tax Documentation Made Easy At the end of each month, LiquiDonate provides Luxome with a consolidated record of all donated items and their fair market values, simplifying the process of claiming charitable deductions. For Chaudhary, an LLC owner, those savings are tangible.
The solution that they had made it so easy for brands. It's brand friendly, they prevent fraud, and they really make it easy. It's kind of a no-brainer." — Hyaat Chaudhary
The partnership between Luxome and LiquiDonate yielded incredible cost savings, community impact, cleared warehouse space, benefited the environment, and opened up meaningful tax benefit possibilities.
*approximated by LiquiDonate comparing the return-to-warehouse distance with the distance travelled from customer to nonprofit.
Depending on box size, region, and weight, companies like Luxome can save up to $10 per item in shipping costs per return with these distances.
Most importantly, Hyaat can now do right by the environment and community without worrying that his brand will get cannibalized by online resale. His team takes pride in their sustainable practices and what they have been able to do for so many individuals in need. The nonprofits continue to cherish these donations:
Our clients feel pampered by the quality of the items — such a great way to welcome someone to their new home when they have struggled without a home for so long.
The lounge wear is so nice and it would be something our clients could not normally afford.
Today, 100% of Luxome's opened returns are routed through LiquiDonate — none return to the warehouse.
Luxome's journey with LiquiDonate is proof that sustainable retail practices and optimizing costs aren't in conflict. They can now make the same decision. What started as a years-long search for a responsible returns solution became a streamlined, cost-saving, brand-protective program that puts high quality goods in the hands of people who need them most.
For retailers and brands still disposing of unsellable returns, Chaudhary puts it plainly:
"f you're disposing of anything into a landfill, there are people out there in need who could use those very items. And it'll frankly save you money and save the planet.
